The  Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS receiver calculates its position by carefully timing the pings sent by the hundreds of GPS satellites high above the Earth. Each satellite continually transmits messages at the speed of light that contain:

The Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS receiver measures the transit time of each message and uses these transit times along with the speed of light to compute the distance to each satellite. These distances are used to compute two estimates of receiver positions.

The final calculated position of the Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS receiver is displayed as

It might seem that three GPS satellites would be enough to determine for a position, however, a three-satellite solution requires that time be known to a nanosecond or so— which is way more accurate than a non-laboratory clock provides. Using four (or more) satellites allows the receiver to determine time as well as geographical position, eliminating the need for a laboratory clock.
